A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a white cross centered in front of a maroon castle tower embattled with five merlons, all between two gold laurel branches, the tower and branches interlaced by three folds of a scarlet scroll curving down across the laurel at left to the castle door at lower center, across the base of the castle, and from the castle door with the words "HONOR COUNTRY SERVICE" in gold letters.
Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The Hospital's basic mission, to provide medical care for the sick and wounded, is represented by the cross; the castle tower, alluding to Europe where the unit served during World War II, has five merlons indicating the unit's participation in that many campaigns. Award of the Meritorious Unit Commendation is signified by the gold laurel and the scarlet of the motto scroll.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 11 June 1971.
